I was reminded once again of a conversation I had more than 30 years ago this week. While speaking with someone about potentially moving their branding and their business to the next level, their response was “well, someday”. But here’s what I’ve learned about waiting for ‘someday’.

My brother-in-law, Chris, was one of the coolest people you’d ever meet. Full of energy, quick to laugh, insanely devoted to his family, and a very talented artist & musician. Interestingly enough, we shared the same birthday (though many years apart). A birthday twin! A fellow Gemini! In fact, he, my then husband, and myself often performed together at various venues. And then it happened.

The big C.

He was diagnosed on our shared birthday. In less than a year, he went from treatment to the grave. By Christmas he was gone.

The Someday Syndrome is the Thief of Dreams

One of the last conversations we had was at his home in Ohio. Hospice had brought a bed in and it was set up in the family room, which was an open concept room that included an eat-in kitchen. We were all gathered to visit with him, have a cookout, and just be there for one another. Each of us took turns going in and sitting next to his bed, just keeping him company.

“When you going to so all those things you keep saying you’re going to do?” He asked, his voice scratchy and weakened.

I remember shrugging and saying, “Oh, someday.”

Seeming to gain strength, his response was simple yet profound: “Promise me you won’t fall into that trap—never wait for someday.” Then he went on to list all of the things that he knew he would now never get to do and that someday, putting things off, was how you have a life half-lived.

Someday Syndrome is the thief of dreams. We tell ourselves we’ll learn that skill, launch that side hustle, or have that conversation… “one day.” But as he taught me, “one day” often becomes never.

Today, pick one thing you’ve been deferring. Write it down. Block time on your calendar. Take the tiniest first step—no matter how small. What is your tiny step?

What’s the “someday” you’re finally going to make happen? Share below and let’s hold each other accountable. 👇
